Play Therapy is a specific counselling approach in which games, toys and other creative media are used to help a child or adolescent to express their emotions, thoughts, wishes and needs. The types of creative media that can be used can include clay, sandtray, drawings and paint. All these and more can help children and adolescents understand muddled feelings and upsetting events that they have not had the chance, or the skills to work through. Rather than having to explain verbally what is troubling them, as adult therapy would usually require, children use play to communicate at their own level, at their own pace, without feeling interrogated or threatened.
Counselling is usually a verbal interaction between a therapist and a client. Usually individuals will seek out counselling because they are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives. Other life issues and events that can be difficult to deal with include, but are not limited to, could be bereavement, divorce, redundancy, health issues, bullying and so on. However you do not have to be in crisis, or on the verge of one before deciding to have therapy. Sometimes you just want to find out more about yourself, and that’s a good thing to do and you need an empathic ear from someone who will listen, try to understand and not judge.
Sandstory Therapy® combines the therapeutic use of sand, water and symbols with the expressive elements of storytelling so that as a client you are able to ‘tell your story in the sand’.SandStory® allows you to safely express, explore and experiment with the issues you may be struggling with or going through. Or it may be just to find out more about your own true self and answer some of those curiosities you have always wondered about! SandStory® holds a safe and gentle space for your conscious to be curious and to ‘dialogue’ with your unconscious so that intuitive insights and significant shifts may take place.
Training courses are something I have lots of experience in running, one and two day workshops on many aspects of child counselling; ‘adult’/’mature’ counselling; play therapy and other creative counselling. I am happy to discuss your needs further at any time. I can provide a venue and have contacts with other professionals in various therapeutic organisations to provide a multi-disciplinary course, should this be of interest. Or if you would prefer me to come into your school or other place of work, I can provide my own materials. All I will need you to provide is a space and a willing group of participants!
Therapy in schools can be a vital part of increasing healthy, emotional well-being for pupils. If your pupils are happy in their mental and emotional state, they will increase their chances of successful achievement and academic potential. This in turn means targets are more likely to be met, there will be less disruption in the classroom, and attendance will increase. As a play therapist or counsellor in a school I offer complete confidence and will work alongside teachers, SENCO, parents and other professionals in ensuring we all strive for the best outcome.
